Shabbos Vaad Planning to Target Entertainment Centers Operating in Jerusalem on Shabbos

ywnisrael6.jpgAs the Eida Chareidis resumes protests against the shabbos operation of Karta parking lot, the Vaad L’maan Shabbos is organizing, having prepared a list of 160 entertainment places operating in Yerushalayim on shabbos, the daily Yisrael HaYom reports. According to the report, the vaad’s chairman, Rav Yosef Rosenfeld states this is unacceptable and the vaad plans to act towards changing this reality.

The rav is quoted as adding this alarming trend must be halted, expressing the pain which accompanies the reality of just how many Jewish-owned entertainment spots, eateries and stores are operating on shabbos. Eida officials are also quoted as saying this is additional proof that allegations the capital is become ‘chareidized’ are simply untrue, and unfortunately, the center of Yerushalayim is no different than Tel Aviv regarding stores operating on shabbos.

Rav Rosenfeld plans to contact chareidi members of the Jerusalem government, to send letters to the stores operating on shabbos, requesting they comply with the law and close their doors.

The report quotes one of the owners of the businesses operating on shabbos, Avi Ben-David, who explains “this is similar to me requesting a halt to tefillos at the Kosel”, explaining this has always been the case in the center of town and “we do not open in their areas and I ask that they stop looking into our areas”.

The statistics quoted in the report show that even if there has been a sharp increase in stores operating on shabbos, they remain in the center of town “far away from chareidi areas”.

  1. Kikar Tzion is about 10 minutes away from Kikar Shabbos, and about 7 minutes from the center of Meah Shearim (on FOOT).

Going from Har Nof and Givat Shaul to the Kosel on Shabbos, one most make a long detour in order not to see the chillul Shabbos on Yaffo Street.

  2. this is what we are interested in? getting people who dont beleive in Torah, to act like they do, so we have a nicer shabbos and cos its better for their souls!!!!!

its like people who are in a miserable marriage pretending that everything is fine so the neighbours dont hear them fighting. the confusion in values is astonishing.

these people are not frum. the reason is cos not enough people are reaching out to them. Jerusalem has shops open on shabbos cos chareidim arent reaching out and teaching the Torah that is so important to them.

  3. Yes, Mr. Breslauer, and when walking from Katamon to Har Hatzofim by foot is difficult avoid unpleasantness in Mea Shearim and Geula.

At least when walking through the center of Yerushalayim, you can be pretty sure that none of those chilonim are going to hit you in the head with a rock.

  4. I am assuming that they plan to make a peaceful protest such as a parade in the area as they do on Kings Highway in New York every year. The results have been amazing. Over there, there are many stores owned by Israelis and every year more stores close for Shabbos. Bezras Hashem they will be just as successful over here.

  5. I think instead of protesting in marching we should be raising money for each establishment to have the money that they would have earned had they worked on shabbos and find a way to keep it up every shabbos.. THAT is a productive protest.. You could also hand out shabbos packages to each establishment with challos, small candlesticks and some food..
Try to think of inspiring ways to do it or it will just BACKFIRE and make them more turned off than before.

  6. frumimaof3, being that we know each other so well I think it would be nicer if I spoke to you in person,(assuming that we have time to do that). At any rate, the facts are that everyone’s Parnasah is decided on Rosh Hashanah and the only reason why these people are making money on Shabbos is because of Masseh Satan. This is what needs to be explained to them. However, handing out Shabbos packages does sound like a nice idea too.
