Deputy Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad is visiting in Washington as the White House seeks to improve diplomatic relations between America and Damascus. He met with Deputy US Secretary of State Jack Liu along with other officials on Capitol Hill.
Syrian officials released statements to the media that talks surrounded a number of issues, including American sanctions imposed on Damascus by the previous Bush administration, and tensions between Syria and Iraq over the latter’s claims that Syria is providing a safe-haven for fleeing Iraqi terrorists.
US President Barak Obama is working to establish a diplomatic relationship with Syria, seemingly willing to turn a blind eye to Damascus’ strong terrorist ties, including its continued willingness to furnish Hizbullah and Iran with weapons to be used against Israel.
