US Mideast envoy George Mitchell met on Thursday in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, as well as with Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Chief of Intelligence General Omar Suleiman.

Mitchell’s meeting comes after two unsuccessful meetings in Jerusalem this week with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, a day before a third meeting is to take place on Friday.

He called on Israel, the PA (Palestinian Authority) and Arab states to create a positive atmosphere conducive to peace, stressing his commitment towards a comprehensive regional peace agreement.

Prior to his return to Jerusalem for the Friday meeting, Mitchell is also scheduled to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
