No Immunity for ‘Breaking the Silence’ Witnesses

It has been learned that the Breaking the Silence organization has been conducting behind the scene negotiations, seeking total immunity for any soldier or officer who gives testimony regarding alleged wrongdoing on the part of military personnel during Operation Cast Lead.

A letter released from IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-General Gabi Ashkenazi’s office, publicized by Channel 10 TV news, states the military commander is unwilling to grant blanket immunity for any soldier or officer. The commander points out that from his point of view, Breaking the Silence is working to besmirch the reputation of the IDF, adding the IDF expects anyone who was witness to violations of orders and operating protocol to step forward, especially information related to injuries to non-involved persons. Ashkenazi adds those with knowledge have a legal and moral obligation to step forward.
