As the nation continues to seek ways to conserve water, Yisrael HaYom has learned that trend has not exactly caught on in the IDF. In one example that was recently documented, a tanker carrying 9,000 liters (about 2,225 gallons) made a delivery to an IDF outpost in the area of Highway 443. The truck dropped off about 5,000 liters and the soldiers were then seen dumping the remainder, about 4,000 liters (1,000 gallons) on the road.
When approached, the drivers explained this is their standard practice, adding it is easier to drive the tanker when it is empty as opposed to the half load.
Yisrael HaYom reports that the IDF spokesman explains the delivering of water is carried out in compliance with army protocol, which includes preventing a waste of water. The spilling of the remaining water is demanded to prevent a safety issue, the movement of so much water than may result in the tanker flipping on its side. In the specific case cited, the IDF promises to investigate.
