MK (Shas) Rav Chaim Amsellem has sent a letter to a number of important rabbonim in Eretz Yisrael calling upon them to lower restrictions and ease the conversion process for new immigrants serving in the IDF.
According to a Kikar report, the rav explains that it is true many of the new immigrants are not Jewish and the conversion is not a stringency measure, but nevertheless, they are from “Jewish lineage” and therefore, are entitled to a less stringent approach. He adds their very willingness to serve in the IDF and place themselves in life-threatening danger is testimony to their commitment to be a member of Am Yisrael. The Rav’s words created more than just a stir among rabbonim, especially his statement that service in the IDF is indeed ‘kiyum mitzvos’.
“By the merit of these and other soldiers, thousands of bnei yeshiva are able to sit and learn, with the soldiers willing to place themselves between us and those who come to harm us, and this is enough of a reason to seek leniency regarding their conversion.
Responding to the news report, Amsellem stated his words were not intended for publication but for rabbonim to review and respond on a strictly halachic basis.
