A 41-year-old driver struck and killed a father and son on Route 70 in the north, near Elyakim Junction. Shortly after the incident, the driver phoned police to report “he struck something”.
The father’s body was discovered about 100 meters from the vehicle and after a search; a number of hours later, the body of the son was discovered in the area as well.
The story begins at about 20:00, when a driver heading south from the village of Marar in the north called police to report he struck something while traveling, telling the police dispatcher they he searched the area of the vehicle but did not find anything but nevertheless felt compelled to report the incident.
After police searched the area, they found the body of a 51-year-old male, who was pronounced dead on the scene. In the meantime, police received a call from a male who stated his brother went out for a walk and did not return. The caller arrived on the scene at about 23:00, and identified the dead man as his brother. He told police that to the best of his knowledge, the man was accompanied by his son. As a result of a subsequent search, the body of the son was found.
The driver was placed under arrest. Police suspect he fell asleep at the wheel. Accident investigators determined the vehicle veered out of control and jumped a security barrier, crashing into the father and son, killing them.
