Having a good understanding of the Arab mentality, former ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) Director Avi Dichter warned that Fatah leaders may decide to launch a “Third Intifada”, namely another wave of terror attacks and warfare from inside Israel as was last seen in 2000 when buses blew up around the country. The bottom line is that Fatah and others have learned that terror advances their cause.
It is clear the PA “will not miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity” the former senior official explained, warning that some of the decisions that may be reached at the Bethlehem hosted Fatah Congress may set diplomatic efforts in the region back years. He points out that as disturbing as it may be, today, 16 years after the signing of the Oslo Agreement, Fatah “moderates” continue to view armed struggle as legitimate and an effective means by which the PA can advance its statehood agenda.
His statements come at a time when the Fatah faction, the suit-and-tie terrorists viewed as the “moderates” by Israel and the White House, remain adamant in their refusal to recognize Israel’s legitimate right to exist as the Jewish Homeland.
Dichter, who also served as public security minister, well in the loop regarding the realities of the PA and security issues, shunned any real hope of a meaningful bilateral agreement with PA – explaining the PA leaders simply do not know how to follow through, how to keep their end of the bargain.
