Israel Rejects EU Call for Unilateral Palestinian State

European Union Foreign Minister Javier Solana took another large step towards the establishment of a Palestinian state, who is continuing to apply pressure on Jerusalem.
Solana turned to the United Nations Security Council, calling upon the international body to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state if one is not established by agreement by a certain date. Such a state would enjoy total UN recognition.

According to Solana’s master plan, the UN would recognize a PA state by a certain date, compelling negotiations to advance. In light of failed talks, the state would be announced unilaterally which would include border parameters, address security issues, Jerusalem and the matter of refugees.

Solana endorses calls for Israel to withdraw from areas taken in the June 1967 Six Day War, areas that would be handed over to Jordan, Syria and Egypt.

In Israel, Foreign Ministry officials rejected the senior EU diplomat’s remarks, explaining that UN Resolutions 242 and 338 along with agreements signed determine that the conflict will be resolved through negotiations.
