Councilman Kellerman Gets the Volume Lowered in Mosques

Jerusalem Councilman Yisrael Kellerman has taken action, bringing relief to residents of the city’s N’vei Yaakov neighborhood, a northern area of the capital that borders Arab communities.

Residents approached Kellerman asking that he do something about the volume of mosque loudspeakers, that begin during the predawn hours and frequently wake children who generally do not go back to sleep.

Kellerman turned to the IDF and police, explaining an officer of the rank of colonel contacted him and he explained that soldiers were sent to the village and mosque officials were instructed to simply lower the volume. Kellerman praised the IDF’s actions, explaining that today, the level is tolerable.

When asked if the prayers are aired over the mosques daily, he stated they are indeed, including shabbos, when it is generally louder since the area is quieter on shabbos. He added that the loud mosques plague other areas of the capital as well, such as Ramot, and the phenomenon is not just limited to N’vei Yaakov.

Kellerman added the colonel told him if the volume returns to its previous offensive level to notify him and they will act again.

  1. If you can’t handle the soound of the mosques, then don’t live next to them. Nobody forced these people to live in Neveh Yaakov.

The Muslims have an equal – if not bigger – right than we have, to live in Jerusalem. Hashem gave them part of the city; they were given Har HaBayis as a reward for being mekayem mitzvas milah.

People who cannot live together with Muslims should go live in a city without Arabs, like Herzliyah, which better suits their political ideology as well.

Jews and Muslims have lived together in Jerusalem for centuries, in peace, and acts of plain and clear hisgarus be’umos like this are disgusting.

  2. #1 – That would depend on whether the IDF asked the Arabs politely if they wouldn’t mind on lowering the volume, or if they demanded it like colonial conquerors. We can live together (possibly) if we both live in a spirit of cooperation.

  3. “The Muslims have an equal – if not bigger – right than we have, to live in Jerusalem. Yishmael has been practicing milah since the Patriarchs yet the bible doesn’t make mention of this…..
Also please note, sound travels beyond borders. Please have the loudspeaker abruptly stop at the end of the arab neighborhoods

  4. #2 – definitely. But then, why couldn’t some of the rabbonim go there to ask the imam to lower the volume? Why send armed soldiers?

#3 – it was quoted in Der Yid about two years ago from one sefer. I asked my rav about it then, who told me that it isn’t just written in one sefer, but in multiple important seforim, and is quite well known.
