Yerushalayim Shabbos Protests – Recap

hafganah1.jpg10:00PM – Motzei Shabbos – Eretz Yisrael: It appears the promised escalated wide scale protests in Yerushalayim did not materialize. According to Kol Chai Radio report, 3,000 took part in the shabbos afternoon protest at Shivtei Yisrael and Shmuel HaNavi Streets, but police were ready and barricades were in position, preventing the protestors from advancing into the intersection, thereby maintaining an open traffic flow to vehicles.

A number of attempts to break through the barricades were reported as well as a number of reported incidents in which rocks were hurled at police. Police horseback units responded quickly, maintaining order for the most part.

Near the Carta parking lot, some 50 protestors tried repeatedly to close the road down, but they were unsuccessful. Thousands took part in the Eida protest that left Meah Shearim on shabbos afternoon, making their way to the Carta parking lot area shouting “shabbos”, decrying the chilul shabbos that the Eida feels is intolerable, the opening of the parking lot by City Hall.

By all accounts, compared to the last two Shabbosim, the events are being described as orderly and relatively quiet. Rabbonim Shlita of the Eida Chareidis announced before shabbos that only avreichim and adults would be permitted to take part and it appears the absence of the young instigators did indeed permit an orderly protest decrying the opening of the Carta parking lot and the associated chilul shabbos.

Unfortunately, shouts of “Nazis”, “you will burn in Gehenom (hell)” and “we beat the Nazis and we’ll beat you were heard among some of the protestors, directing their anger at police.

In the area of French Hill, police report chareidim threw rocks at vehicles traveling on the nearby road leading to Ramot on shabbos afternoon. Police responded quickly. There were no reports of injuries or arrests at that location.

According to a Chadrei Chareidim report, the Erlau Rebbe Shlita told chareidi Jerusalem councilmen that in his opinion they should leave the coalition but the Rebbe added he wishes to hear Rav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv’s opinion as well, stressing he opts for breaking away from the coalition. Sources close to Rav Elyashiv report the Gadol HaDor will address the question this week.

According to one Jerusalem Post weekend report, Shas has been instructed to remain in the coalition by Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, adding the decision is connected directly to Shas’ concerns pertaining to the upcoming election for Jerusalem chief rabbi. Shas is not confirming the report at this time.

At this time, garbage receptacles in the Meah Shearim, Shivtei Yisrael areas are burning. One arrest was made in the shabbos/motzei shabbos events.

  1. The left wingers are right according to their ideology that you may desecrate shabbos
they might be right that The Jews have no claim to Israel the country has no right to exist if we violate the Torah because it is only the Torah that gives us any claim to this holy land.

  2. #3, you want to burn down Yerushalyim? That doesn’t sound so smart now, does it?

(I realize what you meant by this, but lets calm down here)

  3. Getzel. According to the view of the mainstream Gedolei Yisroel (The Chazon Ish, Brisker Rov ect…) the whole state of Israel is illegitimate, regardless if they keep the Torah or not. The concept of a “Medina Al Pi Torah” was not the view of our mainstream Gedolim, but rather of the Mizrachi leaders.

  4. I’m somewhat confused by this news article – one paragraph tells us that “the events are being described as orderly and relatively quiet”, but other parts of the article describe events which sound like chaos…

“A number of attempts to break through the barricades were reported as well as a number of reported incidents in which rocks were hurled at police” “some 50 protestors tried repeatedly to close the road down” “At this time, garbage receptacles in the Meah Shearim, Shivtei Yisrael areas are burning”
    chareidim threw rocks at vehicles

  5. Throwing Stones on Shabbat? Is it a muktza to touch stones, or it is allowed if stones are thrown on non religious Jews?

  6. nazis are le’hashmid u’leharog these freye police are nothing like that chas v’shalom i dont mean to say there rite but to call them nazis is waaaay to far.

  7. I am trying to understand what the Chareidim are trying to accomplish. Do they believe that they will force the “not yet religious” to accept Shabbos by yelling, spitting and cursing? Will these actions bring more people “not yet religious” to respect Halacha and Shabbos?
    Shame on them

  8. #10, It’s the other way around. What are the the “Non religious” trying to accomplish by opening up the parking lot and thereby disturbing the status quo that has been in effect for years? They are the instigators, not the chareidim. They know its a sensitive issue so why are they rocking the boat? Of course the chareidim feel threatened and feel they must respond very strongly to stop this new trend.
