A weapons storage facility was found on Sunday in Kibbutz Ein HaShofeit, containing weapons hidden from the British in 1945. 95-year-old kibbutz member Berel Keren decided it was now safe to reveal the existence of the weapons cache which is under a community gym.
His daughter, Edna Kramer explains there has been a legend of the weapons cache on the kibbutz for years, but no one knew its location and dad was unwilling to reveal the exact location, explaining he took an oath. Despite explaining to him that the British Mandate was over, he was firm in his refusal to reveal the exact location.
The kibbutz was established in 1937 and in 1945, a number of members aligned with the Haganah hid weapons and ammunition, taking an oath not to reveal the location to anyone. Most of the old timers from that time period have already been niftar, but on Sunday, Berel decided the time has come to make the announcement. Police were summoned and bomb technicians came to evaluate the storage facility.
Bomb demolition technicians will on Monday be working to neutralize the weapons and ammunition and remove them from the area.
