In a passionate letter sent to Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Agudas Yisrael Chairman Rav Menachem Porush stated the kedusha of Yerushalayim is not a subject for negotiations, stating the chareidi community will not permit increased chilul Shabbos, calling upon the mayor to order the closure of the parking lot on Shabbos.
Rabbi Porush called on the mayor to recognize the importance of kedushas Shabbos for the chareidi community, which represents a large number of city residents, asking him to refrain from operating a Shabbos parking lot, a move which exhibit’s a callous attitude to their religious sensibilities.
The rabbi expresses surprise that previous requests have not received a response, pointing out that once again Shabbos is approaching and the tensions in the capital are increasing, pointing out that in addition to the chareidi community, others are equally surprised regarding the shift in the religious status quo by City Hall.
The HaMevaser report continues, explaining R’ Porush adds kedushas Shabbos is not subject to discussion, stating a decision pertaining to Shabbos is in the hands of Gedolei Yisrael alone, calling upon the mayor to exhibit leadership and greatness and announce the municipal parking lot will remain closed.
