“There is no guarantee that there will be adequate water supplies from faucets” a report submitted to the Knesset Finance Committee warns. The report was prepared by Prof. Dan Zaslavsky of Haifa’s Technion University, commissioned by Water Authority officials. The report also warns the irrigating crops with treated waste water also pose a health hazard.
Zaslavsky, a former water commissioner, recommends using desalinated water sources which he reports can amount to as much as 15% of available water in Israel. This includes some sources that are not used due to the contamination to the source.
The Knesset committee on Monday is expected to approve a NIS 20 per metric cube of water used exceeding the 4 metric cube allocation per person in hope of diminishing water demand.
