Labor Party MKs Yitzchak Herzog, Avishai Braverman and Shalom Simchon have openly expressed their opposition to the bill introduced by Yisrael Beitenu MK Axelrod seeking to outlaw celebrating the Nakba, the Arab observance of the “catastrophe”, the creation of the State of Israel.

“Even if it is difficult and we do not agree or approve, we must permit freedom of speech and protest” explained Herzog, who fears that such a bill if permitted to become law would be a blemish to the rights of citizens as well as strengthening the extremist minority element of the Israeli Arab community.
