A UN report lets Syria off the hook, at bringing Damascus’ involvement in the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri to an indirect level.
According to the German Der Spiegel, the UN investigators believe the car bomb attack in Syria that claimed the former Lebanese leader’s life was the work of Hizbullah, but the international organization has opted to keep this information under wraps since learning about it a month ago.
Syria has denied responsibility for the 2005 attack despite the international community all but certain Damascus was behind the move, looking to further its interests in Lebanon.
The UN investigators seem to feel that Hariri was simply getting too popular for Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah’s liking, compelling the attack which was masterminded by Hajj Salim and carried out by Abed el-Majid Ghamlush, using some two-dozen cellular telephones to create the deadly link necessary to set the stage for the car bomb attack and detonated the fatal explosive.
On June 7th, Lebanese voters will go to the polls and Hizbullah expects to significantly increase its place in government. Many believe that the next Lebanese government will be formed by Hizbullah and other pro-Iranian/Syrian factions, which has Israel, America and moderate Arab nations concerned.
