Shin Bet Chief: No Chance of Peace With Hamas

hamas1.jpgA few hours after US President Barak Obama spoke of the ‘two-state solution’ and the need to enter into dialogue with the PA (Palestinian Authority), back home in Israel ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) Director Yuval Diskin spoke of other [less popular] realities.

NO PEACE WITH HAMAS
During a briefing of the Knesset Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee, Diskin explained that as long as Hamas rules over Gaza, peace with the PA is not a possibility. He added that this quite period serves Hamas’ interests just fine, with the terrorist organization restocking and rebuilding its forces for the next armed conflict. Hamas he explained remains silent for the most part, quietly working towards achieving its own objectives.

300 WEAPONS SMUGGLING TUNNELS
Diskin had encouraging words for the Egyptian efforts to halt weapons smuggling into Gaza from Sinai, stating of late, an improvement can be seen. He pointed out that one of the primary objectives of Operation Cast Lead was to halt weapons smuggling into Gaza. He added that an estimated 300 smuggling tunnels are operational between Sinai and Gaza. These tunnels serve the civilian population as well, which has established a broad network, importing many items. In addition, dozens of anti-aircraft rockets have made their way into Gaza along with 300 mortar shells and Katyusha rockets. He stated there is no confirmation regarding longer-range rockets.

INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE NEEDED
He explained that Hamas is not about to voluntarily step down and hand over control of Gaza to Abu Mazen and his Fatah faction, and this may only occur as a result of international pressure. His assessment has not changed and he spoke of Hamas’ growing influence in autonomous areas throughout Yehuda and Shomron, adding if elections were held today, Hamas might emerge the victor.

In his briefing, the first to the new committee since the election, Diskin stated that Fatah is fighting to maintain power but reality shows Hamas’ support base is growing daily.

PARTITION BARRIER NOT NECESSARY
On other matters, including the ongoing construction of the security partition barrier, Diskin feels construction can be halted because the intelligence network developed by Israel suffices to stop attacks. He warned however that counter-terror operations must continue in IDF hands and this responsibility mustn’t be handed over to PA security forces.

  1. I am shocked to think that anyone believed there could ever be peace with these creatures…

Their main theme is to destroy.

Peace won’t come until they are gone from Israel…

The two state solution means, THEY go to Jordan and we are left alone!
