MK Tibi Seeking to Abolish Jerusalem Law

MK Dr. Ahmed Tibi is proposing the elimination of the Jerusalem Law which was enacted following the June 1967 Six Day War. Tibi plans to introduce a bill to abolish the law since in his words, “Jerusalem is not liberated but occupied,” seeking to return things to the way they existed prior to the war, with eastern areas of Yerushalayim, including holy sites, under Arab control.

Tibi stated the annexation of Jerusalem must be undone and western Jerusalem will serve as Israel’s capital and eastern Jerusalem the capital of Palestine.

The Jerusalem Law sets the boundaries of the capital as they were on 28 June 1967, declaring it the capital of Israel and home of the Knesset, the government and the High Court of Justice.

“Jerusalem is not united but occupied,” stated Tibi, who stressed there cannot be any regional peace without the re-division of the capital to accommodate a Palestinian state.

Just yesterday (Sunday, May 17th), Tibi announced he would not be attending Tuesday’s Knesset visit to Ir David, explaining from his point of view, the area is “occupied and not liberated”.

Responding were Knesset Speaker Rivlin who stated King David liberated Jerusalem and declared it the Jewish capital forever as well as Ichud HaLeumi MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari, who stated Tibi’s place is “in jail, not in Knesset,” labeling the Arab MK “a Trojan horse”.
