Pope Benedict XVI told Noam and Aviva Shalit that the matter of their son, captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit “touched my heart”, telling them he would try to intervene towards obtaining his release.
 
The Shalits visited the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, together with President Shimon Peres, having an opportunity to deliver their message to the pope on Monday ahead of the Monday evening official welcoming ceremony for the Roman Catholic leader.
