Netanyahu Willing to Enter Shalit Talks Immediately


A senior Jerusalem source released a statement on Monday following the meeting in Egypt between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that the prime minister is willing to enter into talks towards obtaining Gilad Shalit’s release immediately. The source added that next week, the prime minister expects to announce his selection for his special envoy to replace Ofir Dekel, who is handling the Egyptian-mediated Shalit talks.
 
Following his Monday afternoon return from Egypt, the prime minister signaled that the first meeting with Mubarak since the election went very well, seeking to exhibit an air of optimism ahead of next week’s White House visit.
 
The senior sources stated Mr. Netanyahu is willing to begin immediately with talks on the PA front as well as regarding Shalit.
 
Following the meeting, the prime minister expressed his praises for Egypt’s role, calling Cairo and a “foundation of regional stability”, explaining the meeting was to permit him to express his administration’s recognition of Egypt’s vital role in peace-making efforts. He went on to explain he wishes to move ahead “towards achieving peace with our neighbors the Palestinians, to permit Israelis and Palestinians to see peace on the horizon along with security and prosperity”.
 
He went on to speak of “the elements which threaten regional stability. The dispute is not related to religion but fanaticism verses moderation, and we must strengthen and back the Egyptian cooperation”.
 
While the Arabic al-Shark al-Awsat reported on Monday the issue of Iran would not be discussed during the Sharm el-Sheikh meeting, aides to the prime minister stated that there is no difference between Jerusalem’s and Cairo’s position vis-à-vis Iran.
 
From his part, Mubarak stated “we are seeking a position Israeli position that will signal Israel’s true willingness towards peace. Egypt views the two states for two peoples concept as a basis for peace. This will permit moving ahead based on the Arab proposal, the need for a ceasefire, the opening of [Gaza] crossings and lifting the [Gaza] embargo”.
 
Industry & Trade Minister (Labor) Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who maintains a good relationship with Mubarak, accompanied PM Netanyahu on Monday. He echoed the prime minister’s words regarding the pivotal role played by Egypt in contributing to regional peace and stability.
