The London-based Arabic al-Shark al-Awsat report, Egypt has stationed an additional 500 troops the Rafiach Crossing between Sinai and Gaza.
The newspaper report speaks of uniformed and plainclothes security officials who are hoping to minimize weapons smuggling into Gaza. Dirt mounds have been placed in position as barriers as well, resulting in significant concern among smugglers who are seeking alternative access to the tunnels.
Egyptian officials are indicating they have effectively cut off the tunnel access routes, adding monitoring is ongoing with US assisted state-of-the-art electronic surveillance. The report quotes Gazan residents are expressing anger over the cutting off of the supply train.
The tunnel system that has been created consists of a sophisticated network of underground routes that not only serve terrorists, but have resulted in a vast profitable underground network for the importation of food and supplies for the Hamas-controlled area’s residents.
