DM Barak: There Are No Second Chances In The Mideast

barak.jpgIn his Memorial Day address, Defense Minister Ehud Barak stated on Monday evening that “this is not western Europe or North America. There are no second chances for the weak”.

The senior minister spoke of the many serious existential threats facing Israel today, mentioning Iran. Barak called on the White House to set a timetable for talks, as well as turning to the international community to implement increasingly stringent sanctions. He added at present, Israel does not take any options off the table.

Barak expressed confidence that the coming years will bring regional peace efforts, adding with a modicum of certainty that efforts to bring peace with the PA (Palestinian Authority) will be productive.

Interestingly, Barak’s comments come shortly following PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) vowing to never recognize Israel as a Jewish state. He made his statement in a Ramallah address.

Barak concluded optimistically, speaking of his confidence that there will be a better future, adding Israel remains the strongest nation in the region as she has recently proven on her northern and southern borders.

  1. Leadership = talking, lecturing and pontificating.

Leaders talk with two voices, the inside voice for a select few (or for their own countrymen) and the louder & stronger voice for the outside world to hear.

  2. It’s funny he says that “there are no second chances for the weak”. I think his Labor party is the biggest disproof to that.
