Labor Party officials on Sunday will convene and they are expected to approve the decision of party leader Ehud Barak to oust the party’s secretary from his position, MK Eitan Cabel. This will serve to provide a modicum of support for Barak’s controversial leadership position, but will undoubtedly inflame the party rebels, who are adamantly opposed to Barak’s policy decisions, primarily the move to join the coalition government.
The rebel faction plans to fight back and they will be introducing a motion to oust the party leader, Barak. They also plan to take their case to the party’s judicial authority.
Supporters of Barak explain the removal of Cabel as secretary is only the first measure of a number of measures planned by Barak to restore order within the party. In the meantime, the rebels, numbering five MKs, remain adamant in their refusal to commit to remain loyal to the coalition.
