Sunday Afternoon News Briefs from Eretz Yisrael


At least three people were arrested during an attempted break-in into a bank on Kanfei Nesharim Street in the Givat Shaul area of Yerushalayim on motzei Shabbos.

**The Defense minister ordered a general closure beginning tonight, Sunday, until midnight Wednesday following Yom HaAtzma’ut. PA residents will be banned from inside Green Line Israel during the closure.

**The Foreign Ministry issued an alert instructing Israelis in Mexico City to adhere to instructions of health officials. A travel advisory is not being issued however.

**Health officials have briefed hospital directors in Israel in the event of any reported cases of swine flu.

**MDA blood bank officials report blood donations will not be accepted from people returning in the past week from Mexico, California and Texas due to the outbreak of swine flu in those areas.

**Israel Independence Day celebrations are canceled in Mexico due to spread of swine flu as state officials close schools and universities. This includes the annual Foreign Ministry program in that city.

**Jerusalem Municipality is working to better serve Arab residents, offering an Arabic website and now translating close to 100 municipal forms into Arabic.

**US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton makes a surprise visit to Lebanon to meet with state leaders. Clinton called for “open and free elections” without outside interference.

**Finance Ministry expected to levy a NIS 70 monthly cellular phone tax on 2 million work-related cell phones in the hope of generating NIS 200 million annually.

**Deputy Premier (Likud) Silvan Shalom announced at the Sunday cabinet meeting that he plans to visit Egypt soon towards strengthening regional ties.

**3,000 youths visiting Israel from around the world are expected to take part in Memorial Day ceremonies to strengthen the message pertaining to the establishment of Israel following the Holocaust. The youths, many non-Jews, took part in the March of the Living in Europe last week.

**Firefighters extinguished a blaze on a bus near Geha Jct. shortly after noon on Sunday. No injuries were reported.

**EU officials during the early afternoon hours on Sunday report there are no documented cases of swine flu in Europe.

**The government on Sunday approved the appointment of Tzvi Hauser as cabinet secretary.

**IDF soldiers arrested an Israeli female on Sunday as she exited PA (Palestinian Authority) controlled Shechem. She was turned over to police for violating the IDF ban on entering PA autonomous areas.

**Egyptian health officials on Sunday morning declared a state of emergency as a result of the spread of swine flu around the world. New Zealand’s health minister reported that 10 students who recently returned from Mexico appear to have contracted the illness as well.
