Hamas Overrides Egyptian Decision to Open Rafiach Crossing

Hamas Interior Ministry officials in Gaza on Wednesday defied Egypt’s effort to open the Rafiach Crossing, not complying with the Egyptian lead to open the passageway from Gaza to Sinai. Hamas officials seem to be flexing their political muscle, explaining the move simply as not having received official authorization from Egypt for the crossing opening.

Hamas further states the current method of opening the crossing is degrading to residents and therefore, unacceptable, stating the opening must be prearranged and done is a fashion that addresses the honor of Gazan residents.

Gaza officials added that it has been decided that opening the crossing must be coordinated three days in advance to prevent misunderstandings, such as the last time the opening was operational, when Egypt refused to permit passage to all the Gaza residents seeking to take advantage of the situation.
