After three days in a coma, on Monday, 5-year-old Ashdod resident Ohr-David Vaknin regained consciousness, an occurrence being labeled his “Purim miracle” by his parents.
Yossi, Ohr’s dad explains that on Thursday, while crossing a street, a passing vehicle struck Ohr, dragging him under the vehicle about nine meters. He was stuck underneath the vehicle’s engine. “He simply rolled along like a snowball” recalls Yossi in a pained voice. “I was panicked. I saw what was happening and I wanted to stop the Subaru but there was nothing I could do”.
The vehicle finally stopped and with the assistance of passersby, they lifted the vehicle and Ohr was taken out from underneath as rescue workers operated on the scene. He was eventually transported to Kaplan Hospital in Rechovot.
The child arrived in a coma, on life support with assisted breathing apparatus. Dr. Alvin Tabachnik, the director of ICU medicine reports that to his pleasant surprise, there was no internal bleeding or any apparent major injuries. His major organs were undamaged and now it is apparent that Baruch Hashem, the child did not sustain any neurological damage. Dr. Tabachnik believes the fact that the vehicle dragged him may have saved him since he was never run over by any of the wheels.
After Ohr regained consciousness on Monday, doctors conducted an extensive neurological exam and determined that it appears Ohr is indeed fortunate and will return to his pre-accident state. In the meantime, he remains in Kaplan Hospital for observation.
