The Movement for Quality Government has turned to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to prevent the appointment of Daniel Friedman as justice minister in the incoming administration.
The movement feels that the incoming prime minister should not be permit Yisrael Beitenu to select the justice minister when the party’s leader, Avigdor Lieberman, is currently under police investigation.
The movement sent a letter to Binyamin Netanyahu, Mazuz and Lieberman, pointing out that the latter is currently the subject of an extensive police investigation that alleges charges including money laundering, accepting bribes, breach of trust, and falsifying records. Therefore contends the movement, permitting such a person to select the justice minister is a tainted decision that may have widespread ramifications in additional to posing a major danger to prudent acceptable government practice.
The letter adds that Friedman during his current tenure has been leading an unprecedented attack against the Supreme Court and the law-enforcement system of the nation. As such, Lieberman’s appointment will only serve to further strengthen his position as Friedman’s tenure contributed to the sharp drop in the publics’ trust in the High Court. The movement also maintains Friedman’s appointment would be deemed a threat to any law-enforcement agency involved in the investigation against Lieberman.
The movement also feels that while the subject of a major police investigation Lieberman should not be appointed to a cabinet post, especially a senior post such as finance or foreign affairs.
