Concerns Over Balance of Power Shift Along Northern Border

While the nation focuses on events along Israel’s southern border to Gaza, Hizbullah appears busy, working to acquire advanced anti-aircraft weaponry which officials state would be viewed by Israel as an ‘upset of the balance of power’ and would compel an Israeli response.

Intelligence reports state Syria is preparing to arm Hizbullah with the anti-aircraft weaponry, a reality that has officials in Israel concerned.

While touring the northern border on Tuesday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak stated “I don’t advise Hizbullah to test us. The result may be more painful than imagined,” adding Israel holds Lebanon responsible for any Hizbullah hostilities across the international border. Barak was referring to intelligence reports pointing to a planned major attack to mark the first anniversary of the car bomb assassination of senior Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniyeh.

Barak further explained that Hizbullah is not just a terror organization manning the hilltops, but has ministers sitting in the government [of Lebanon] and they decide on policy, thereby making the Lebanese government responsible.
