For those of your who remember a few months ago, pertaining to the nationwide storm over the issue of the giyur process of thousands of people, one of the central figures was Rav Avraham Sherman Shlita, of the Rabbinical Supreme Court.
Well, it appears Rav Sherman was slated for dismissal due to his actions in the giyur controversy but Shas leader Eli Yishai was once again called to act, this time by Maran Rav Elyashiv Shlita.
Yishai’s actions turned around the appointment committee, which is not requesting or recommending Rav Sherman’s dismissal at this time.
Government officials ordered Sherman’s dismissal after his controversial ruling disqualifying the conversions of the government-appointment giyur program headed by Rav Chaim Druckman Shlita. The ruling led to many complaints from the dati leumi sector to the state ombudsman, leading to pressure and the decision to dismiss Rav Sherman.
Following Yishai’s success at Wednesday’s meeting of the judicial appointments committee, he was summoned to Maran Rav Elyashiv’s home to permit the Gadol Hador to personally express his gratitude. During their discussion, Rav Elyashiv added the chareidi tzibur owes a great debt to Rav Sherman who “stands on the Mishmar Kodesh”.
