IDF fire that struck the home of 55-year-old gynecologist Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish over the weekend resulted in the deaths of many of his family members; including daughters aged 20, 15 and 13, as well as a niece. A son and daughter were wounded along with the doctor’s brother, all being treated at Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer in Tel Aviv.
The hospital’s director, Prof. Ze’ev Rothstein called the incident a tragedy, perhaps “the tragedy of this war” describing the doctor as a peace-loving individual who in the past worked in Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva. Rothstein stated that Abuelaish always worked for peace between Jews and Arabs.
Rothstein made arrangements to bring the wounded to his hospital after hearing of the incident, adding it is not possible that gunfire came from his house, stating without a doubt he would not harbor Hamas terrorists. The professor quickly added that he does not plan to criticize the IDF and he is confident a comprehensive investigation will be conducted, stressing the IDF does not shoot at innocent civilians.
One Israeli woman who happened to pass the hospital lobby as the Dr. Abuelaish was speaking to the media shouted angrily and questioned why he was being given VIP treatment and a media forum in Israel when she has three sons serving in the paratroopers in Gaza. The incident was captured on the evening news, to which the doctor responded that he hopes his daughters would be the last sacrifices of the war.

Channel 1 is reporting that the shrapnel was tested and shows it to be from a Grad missile (the kind Hamas uses, not the IDF).
