Military officials on Wednesday confirmed reports that Hamas fired a mortar shell containing white phosphorus, landing in the Eshkol region. There were no injuries or damage in that attack.
A day earlier, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi issued an official statement denying International Red Cross accusations that Israel fired white phosphorus rockets into Gaza.
Hamas has continued to release statements from Gaza that it will “surprise the Israeli people” by its response. Israel now knows the terrorist regime has the chemical rockets and has successfully learned how to fire it in the mortar shells used against Israel.
While white phosphorus it is not officially considered a “chemical weapon” its use has been banned but it should be pointed out that America used phosphorus in Iraq and Israel used them in 2006 in the Second Lebanon War “against military targets in open areas” according to IDF statements.
In the current operation, Cast Lead, according to a report appearing in the Christian Science Monitor, Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert indicates Israel is using white phosphorus against civilian targets. While the International Red Cross has raised the issue, the international organization quickly added it does not have any proof to substantiate the allegations.
White phosphorus is used at times for its smoke-screen properties but it is quite devastating to humans, with the potential of causing death three ways; by burning deep into tissue, by being inhaled as a smoke, and by being ingested. Extensive exposure by burning and ingestion is fatal.
