IDF: Look for a Shul with Protection on Shabbos

IDF Homefront Command officials have set regulations pertaining to shuls in the south for this coming Shabbos. Officials urge residents to seek shuls with shelters, safe areas, or areas providing adequate protection in the event of rocket attacks. A shul without a protective area but with a roof complying with regulations may accommodate up to 100 people. Shuls without protective areas and roofs that are unsuitable for the current situation may not hold minyanim this Shabbos.

Bomb shelters used as shuls must also serve the general public in the event of rocket alert sirens. Candles, including Shabbos candles, may not be lit in bomb shelters. Residents are instructed to only light candles in their homes. The ‘quiet radio’ will operate over Shabbos in the Ashkelon area on 101.5 FM.

  1. The Tziyonim making excuses why there should not be minyanim in Shuls, why there should be taruvos in shelters serving as shuls, and why people shouldn’t light shabbos candles. A 50 dollar bet to tzedakah says they’ll sound the siren 2 minutes before candle lighting causing everyone to flee to shelters and then they’ll sound the all clear about 20 minutes later causing many not to light Shabbos candles. My advice? It is a shas hashmad and one is required to be moser nefesh even on a shoelace and much more so on candle lighting, one of the sheva mitzvos dirabbanan. Ignore the signal if it’s within 5 minutes of lighting. Eventually the Soldiers will come to understand who was really protecting whom. Have a good Shabbos.
