There are reports the IDF continues to prepare for a Gaza operation as a growing number of ministers seem oppose renewing the ceasefire under the current realities, continued rocket fire into Israel while the government continues to exhibit restraint. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on Sunday came out strongly regarding her opposition to the ceasefire, and the need for the IDF to respond to every attack, without exception.
In the meantime, in Hamas-controlled Gaza, celebrations were held marking the terror organization’s 21st anniversary. The main event was a theatrical performance with an Arab actor exhibiting physical features similar to that of Gilad Shalit appearing on stage dressed in an IDF uniform. He got on his knees and began begging in Hebrew as a large crowd looked on in pleasure. The skit continued, poking fun at Israeli efforts to reach a deal for Shalit’s release. At one point, the Hamas Gilad Shalit stated, “I miss abba and ima. I send regards” as over 200,000 of Hamas supporters looked on.
On a another Hamas front, Hamas has reaffirmed its position, that on the morning of January 9th, it will no longer recognize the legitimacy of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) and will declare Aziz Duwick, who is imprisoned in Israel, as the new president. Such a move will undoubtedly increase in-fighting between Hamas and Fatah and further contribute to regional instability.
