Following a Channel 2 report, the army is investigating alarming statistics that the rate of soldiers in the Nachal Brigade diagnosed with cancer is two-and-a-half times higher than in other IDF brigades. One possible cause being investigated is possible exposure to carcinogens in the area of the brigades training base in Tel Arad, situated not too far from a waste treatment plant.

The results of the report are being studied by the Health Ministry, IDF Medical Corps and a group of experts enlisted by the military. Channel 2 maintains the military received the startling news some seven years ago, but only recently has decided to act, reviewing the data.

The Office of the IDF Spokesperson released a statement that IDF Chief Medical Officer Brig.-Gen. Dr. Nachman Ash is working with a team of experts and the health officials for over a year, seeking to find a possible source. Since the number of diagnosed cases is low Baruch Hashem, they have not been able to arrive at any conclusive decision and at present, research continues.
