The official swim season ended on October 28th and this year, the number of fatalities was up sharply from the previous year, 44 as compared to 34 in 2007.
Most of the fatalities occurred in Bat Yam, Tel Aviv, Ashdod and Ashkelon. It is reported that overwhelming number of fatalities took place on unauthorized beaches or beaches closed to swimmers.
