Bet Shalom Residents & Supporters Preparing for the Standoff

scuf.jpgOver 1,000 people were on hand on Tuesday night, taking part in the assembly in support of Bet HaShalom in Chevron. The participants vowed to take part in the struggle to prevent their forced eviction from the building which was legally purchased.

The Supreme Court on Sunday ruled the dozens of residents of the apartment building must leave as of Wednesday morning. The court ruled that the final determination regarding the ownership of the building would be made in the future, but until that time, the state would take possession of the building and the Jews would be ousted, a move that strengthens the position of the Arab who challenges the legitimacy of the purchase.

Undoubtedly any attempt to exercise the court-ordered eviction will be met with firm resistance, with supporters of Bet Shalom stating they will not leave and they will do whatever necessary to protect their home.

Kadima officials are not too anxious to order security forces to move in at a time just weeks ahead of the general elections, realizing the scene will not be a pretty one. Some warn that the scenes from the bloody forced eviction from Amona will be dwarfed by the resistance that will be seen here, in Chevron.

Rav Sholom Dov Wolpe, a Chabad rav who is a staunch advocate of the Greater Land of Israel philosophy of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe ZT”L, has offered NIS 1,000 for every day a soldier sits in prison for disobeying orders to take part in a forced evacuation of residents from Bet HaShalom.

Also present at the assembly on Tuesday night was Rav Dov Lior Shlita, chief rabbi of Kiryat Arba, who stated the building was paid for “in Jewish blood”, stressing it is rightfully the property of the Jewish community.

MK Nissim Ze’ev of Shas is just one of the public officials who have joined the battle, relocating to Bet HaShalom with two of his children. Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlita has instructed Shas leader Eli Yishai to contact Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in an effort to prevent any forced eviction. Other prominent rabbanim and public leaders are working to prevent the forced eviction, which the court instructed should take place within in month.

In a related matter, people living in the building called for questioning by police who are investigating the sale of the building to the Jewish community, were called for a third and fourth time following Sunday’s court ruling. They told the press that police told them that they must continue searching “under the floorboards if need be” to find anything at all, no matter how insignificant, to place a shadow of doubt on the legitimacy of the sale. Chevron police investigators apologized for calling them back for questioning, but explained their orders come from high up in the chain of command.

In the meantime, this Shabbos is Parshas Chayei Sarah, and tens of thousands of visitors are expected to make their way to the Ma’aras HaMachpelah and Chevron for Shabbos.

  2. annual “shabat chevron” held every year on parshat chayei sarah

people come to chevron from usa just to hear how avraham avinu paid today’s value of $17,000,000 (plus increase in real estate values) just for the field.

  3. why are they being evicted? if they hav proof of sale, gr8! if they don’t, the courts right. but even if they do, is the reason the court ordered them out bec. of security problems? that they can’t b protected properly? and they’re doing it for their own good? just may be the army isn’t responsible for their protection if they’re living totally surrounded by arabs y’s.

  4. As a Jew I clame the ownership of the Har Habayit I wonder if the “state would take possession” of it. The left hate Frum Jews,or anyone that loves Israel. They are insane!!
