Likud MK Gilad Erdan stated that the value of a democratic society is a lofty one, one that should be adhered to, but Israel must always remember that above all, Israel is a Jewish State and it must maintain its Jewish character.
Erdan made his comments following the Sunday’s Supreme Court ruling against the residents of Chevron’s Bet HaShalom. He lauded the pioneering spirit of the ten families residing in the building, decrying the decision to oust them as they continue the struggle towards a growing Jewish presence in Chevron.
Erdan stated the court has a defined agenda and it is not just a matter of left verses right, but ultra-libertarian verses more conservative views which are indeed the view of the overwhelming number of residents of the country.
Speaking with Kol Chai Radio, Erdan stated he hopes if Likud forms the next government, the justice minister will continue the reforms that were started by Justice Minister Friedman to balance the power of the judicial system, citing the miscarriage of justice surrounding the High Court’s decision to oust the Jews from the Chevron multi-structure building that was legally purchased by the Jewish community. Erdan stated that nonetheless, the court’s ruling must be adhered to.
He added that he is a personal friend of the current minister, and he asked him if there is any chance that he would run for a slot on the Likud ticket in the upcoming election. Erdan stated that Justice Minister Friedman stated he has no plans whatsoever to enter the political arena under any ticket, not Likud or any other party.
