In his first press conference following his election victory, Jerusalem Mayor-elect Nir Barkat told reporters in the King David Hotel that his administration will examine continuing to move ahead towards the completion of the Jerusalem light-rail project and the operation of the Chords Bridge. The two projects are the legacy of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who prior to leaving Jerusalem City Hall approved the projects despite objections from many experts.
Barkat stated that today, there are high-tech alternatives to the above ground light rail, perhaps better suited to the city as well as more cost effective. He added that the construction of the rail system continues to result in hardships for pedestrians and businesses alike. He blasted the projects and their costly price tags, NIS hundreds of millions to date.
Regarding the bridge, he stated he will study the relevant data and if he learns the structure will be too costly to maintain and not cost effective, he will not hesitate to dismantle it.
Barkat stated he does not remain bound by the decision to move ahead with the controversial projects and his administration will reach its decision based on budgetary and other relevant considerations.
Barkat turned to the chareidi community during the media event, calling upon chareidim not to exhibit concern, vowing to maintain the religious status quo in Yerushalayim, explaining he does not have any plans to cut off funding to chareidi institutions as some fear he may.
