Analysts report that the dati leumi camp was divided in the vote, with gedolim such as Rav Yaakov Shapira, the rosh yeshiva of Merkaz HaRav, calling to support Meir Porush. This in addition to Porush’s impressive record which includes significant assistance to Yesha communities and many areas of interest to the dati leumi camp over his years in public office.
Nevertheless, other prominent rabbonim such as Rav Shlomo Aviner did not come out for Porush, with some analysts explaining they just cannot bring themselves to support chareidim, even at the price of having a non-frum mayor back in Jerusalem City Hall.
While the Channel 1 TV poll hands a victory to Barkat, the secular candidate is not celebrating just yet, well-aware that the race was close and the votes need to be counted before he can raise a glass of champagne.
