Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak released a statement that he believes captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit is unharmed.

Mubarak added that Gilad recently received the letter sent from his parents [via French President Nicolas Sarkozy] and they should be receiving a response in the near future.

Mubarak added “the Palestinians are not stupid” when questioned if he believes they will kill him. He explained they know what the response would be and they also wish to use it to obtain the release of hundreds of prisoners.

Shalit was taken captive in a cross-border Hamas offensive in Kerem Shalom on June 25, 2006.  No one has been permitted to see him since, not even representatives of the International Red Cross.
