Vexing Appeal to High Court to Halt Funding for Talmudei Torah in Eretz Yisrael

funding.jpgThe Movement for Quality Government during Sukkos turned to the Supreme Court with a petition to halt funding to Chinuch Atzmai, claiming the ongoing policies of discrimination in the Education Ministry in favor of Chinuch Atzmai and Mayan HaChinuch HaTorani must come to an end. The petition adds the distribution of funds to these organizations is contrary to the law, and at the expense of other learning institutions, as well as discriminatory to other students and schools. Named in the lawsuit are the minister of finance, minister of education, the government and legal advisor to the government.

The petitioners request that Education Minister Prof. Yuli Tamir be ordered to halt funding for these institutions immediately. The ministry allocates NIS 170 million annually. The petition cites 186 Chinuch Atzmai affiliated talmudei torah, requesting the funding be halted to all of them.

The petition explains the allocating of funds to these institutions is illegal, stressing the schools listed belong to the chareidi education network that is not recognized by the law.

Chinuch Atzmai Director Rav Avraham Yosef Lazerson explains there is nothing new here, calling petitions by the Reform Movement and Movement for Quality Government “tsunamis of hate and jealousy and an ongoing attempt to bring the chareidi chinuch in Eretz Yisrael to a state of despair.”
