Friday Afternoon News Briefs from Eretz Yisrael


yw_israel2.jpg**In an apparent response to angry statements from the Israeli Arab community, Israel Police on Friday issued a new operating protocol stating police are banned from using live ammunition in riot situations, even if one believes his life is being threatened.

** Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency medical service, has move to heightened alert status for fear of rioting erupting in other cities other than Akko.

** Israel Police remains on high alert fearing the break-out of riots in racially mixed cities. Reinforcements have been deployed in Yerushalayim, with an emphasis placed on the Old City.

** Three people who placed an explosive device under or near a Beit Shemesh building have been arrested. A gag order has been placed on details surrounding the investigation.

** Afula Fire District Operations Officer Miki Cohen reports that a bus fire in Nazareth Illit was extinguished without injuries.

** A 70-year-old Arab male was struck by a vehicle and killed on Route 444 near Taibeh.

** A man fell one story and sustained light injuries while working on his sukka on Rav Meltzer Street in Bnei Brak.

** A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured near Tamir Hall on Golda Meir Boulevard in Yerushalayim. The victim, who sustained a head injury, was transported to the trauma unit of Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

** Kiryat Shmona fire officer Yair Elkayam reports a major blaze near the city’s industrial area was extinguished without injuries.

** A Jerusalem resident fell two stories on Yanush Korchick Street while working on his sukka. He reportedly sustained a moderate head injury and was transported to the trauma unit of Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. This is the third reported injury requiring transport to an emergency room for people building a sukka since motzei Yom Kippur.

** Na’alin: At least one border policeman was lightly injured by rocks as Arabs held a violent protest against construction of the security barrier in the area.
