Israel Prize Laureate Targeted in a Bomb Attack

Israel Prize laureate Prof. Ze’ev Sternhell was targeted in a bomb attack on Wednesday evening. He was lightly wounded in his lower extremities. Police are calling the motive for the attack “ideological”; explaining most likely, someone opposed to Sternhell’s outspoken left-wing views may have perpetrated the attack.

The bomb exploded at about 1:00AM as the professor was locking the door to his Jerusalem home. He was transported to Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

Stern’s wife reports he has not received threats during recent weeks. Not wasting time, Yariv Oppenheim, the director-general of the radical left-wing Peace Now organization blamed “right-wing extremists”.

Oppenheim called on law-enforcement officials to abandon their light-handed policy regarding “settlers” and he called for a hard-line approach “to prevent the next political assassination.”

The Land of Israel Forum protested granting the prestigious prize to the radical left-wing professor, who has made public calls to overrun the Shomron community of Ofrah with tanks and he also encouraged Arabs to attack Jews living in Yehuda and Shomron.

Members of the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) Jewish Unit and Israel Police are investigating. It is also being reported that authorities have placed security on Yariv Oppenheim.
