Maran Elyashiv Warns of Iranian Threat

eliyashiv.jpgMaran Rav Yosef Sholom Elyashiv Shlita is quoted by HaShavua as stating, “We are heading to a difficult year.”  His comments were taken from a Yated Neeman, keeping with what has become an annual event, an Elul media interview.

“The Yishuv Yehudi” is in danger, explained the Rav. “We are dealing with the Palestinians but the real threat comes from Iran. The existential threat to Israel comes from there.” (The Rav has mentioned the Iranian threat in the past as well).

The Rav also mentioned concerns regarding the coming year vis-à-vis Chinuch Atzmai and the upcoming elections for the Chief Rabbinate Religious Council.

He stressed concerns regarding the future of Yerushalayim. One of the people present understood Rav Elyashiv was making reference to the upcoming municipal elections and the candidacy of Meir Porush. He asked, “We have an agreement. What can be done?”

The Rav responded, “What is an agreement? Are you familiar with it? An agreement is made between two sides, or at the very least, one side. It is intended to be beneficial. Here, both sides lose. We need a candidate who can win, and then there is significance to an agreement.”

Responding to the Rav, “but if everyone rallies around him he can win,” Rav Elyashiv said, “everyone who understands something realizes he will not win. It must be checked. If he will not win, then the agreement is null and void.”

A number of issues were raised, but the Iranian threat dominated the meeting, followed by the Rav’s concerns regarding the Jerusalem mayoral election. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

  1. R’ Elyashiv is referring to the agreement between Agudah and Degel. This agreement is forcing current mayor Lupolianski out. R’ Elyashiv seems to feel that both sides stand to lose from Lupolianski not running for reelection, because if he would there is a great chance that he will win.

  2. Here you have straight from the Godol Hador. Despite his advanced age (and may he continue to be well),he is completely “with it” on major issues. Yet he states emphatically in regard to the race for Mayor in Yerushalayim, ” “What is an agreement? Are you familiar with it? An agreement is made between two sides, or at the very least, one side. It is intended to be beneficial. Here, both sides lose. We need a candidate who can win, and then there is significance to an agreement.”
It is high time for Agudah to stop the baloney politics. It is time for everyone to rally around Lipulansky…the only charedi candidate who can win.

  3. torboy74,
Several years ago Degel Hatorah made an agreement with the Agudah that the Agudah would support the Degel candidate for mayor of Yerushalayim, Uri Lupoliansky, on condition that at the next election Lupoliansky would step down and not run for reelection and then degel would support an agudah candidate. Lupoliansky won and has been mayor for a few years and now he kept his word and is not running for reelction. The Agudah has chosen Rabbi Meir Porush as its candidate.

The problem is that the polls indicate that Rabbi Porush will loose the election to a secular candidate, but if Lupoliansky runs again he will probably win. Therefore many feel, and Rav Elyashiv seems from this article to agree, that Lupoliansky should run again despite the agreement, because Poruch won’t win anyway and therefore the agreement is worthless.

  4. #3, see #5, to which I would add the other two parts: teshuvah and tzedakah.

Everything, everything that happens in this world is in response to our actions, b’klal ubeprat.

Kesivah vachasimah tovah to all of Klal Yisroel.

  5. Dear YWN Editor,

In the past every comment I have submitted begging Meir Porush to stand down and to allow Uri Lupoliansky to run (and pG win) has not been published, maybe now that Moron HaRav Eliashiv shlita has hinted the same you will be fair and honest enough to publicise these public calls for simple sanity.

All Betar residents are aware and have felt the forcefulness of the Porush desire to win the Yerushalayim campaign and to become mayor. The whole town suffered weeks of internal fighting and worse during the Betar Mayoral elections all so that Porush could prove his point. At that time he disobeyed HaRav Eliashiv (now he is realizing the danger he is in as the litvishes wont vote for him and agrees that he will ask him mechiloh as reported in “Hashavua” and “Bakehillo” and in the chiloni press) and his own Rebbe, the Boyaner Rebbe shlita, who has thrown him and all his family from all Boyaner mosdos!! In Boyan he is even accused of intalling listening devices in the Rebbe’s private rooms (such devices were found but the Rebbe refused to allow Police investigations in case it will cause Porush to be sent to prison!!!)

It is clear to all us Yerushalmites that if Deri runs then he has a chance to win if Porush backs down and if not then Barkat (chiloni) will win and without Deri the only chareidi who can beat Barkat is Lupoliansky so why oh why Porush are you being so stubborn? What is wrong with being an MK? Your father Reb Menachem also advised you against this stupid move so what is going on? For your own sake, when you lose you will have lost Yerushalayim to the chilonim and your own name to the chareidim. Please back down!

Many of us have said the same about Porush verus Uri. Goodbye agreement and welcome reality, Porush is just not sellable as the winning candidate. Why would an agreement be more impt than sponsoring a winner? Why? Because politics stink and lshem shemayim is not the bottom line.
“upcoming elections for the Chief Rabbinate Religious Council”. IOW’s we do not want Rav Ovadia Yosef’s son & his halachic point of view that is not shared by the charedei olem. Thought that since the Chief Rabbinate was posul in many eyes, who cares and why care????
