Iran Unveils Underground ‘Missile City’ in Show of Force Against U.S. and Israel

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has unveiled a new underground base housing advanced cruise missiles designed to target naval destroyers in strategic southern waters.

The announcement coincided with “Islamic Revolution Guards Day,” with Iran’s top military officials, including Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri and IRGC Chief Commander Major General Hossein Salami, inspecting the new facility. The base, located along Iran’s southern shores, is the third such “missile city” revealed by the IRGC in less than a month.

According to Iranian reports, the subterranean missile facility enhances Iran’s military capabilities by providing protection against potential strikes from adversaries, including Israel, the United States, and Gulf nations. IRGC officials claim the upgraded missiles stored in the base are equipped to counter electronic warfare and can be deployed rapidly.

Iran’s recent unveiling of underground missile bases follows a pattern of demonstrating its military readiness and deterrence strategy. On January 18, the IRGC showcased an underground naval missile base in the Persian Gulf, and earlier, on January 10, another underground missile facility was revealed by Iran’s Aerospace Force.

Iran has repeatedly positioned its missile arsenal as a deterrent against potential threats from Israel and the U.S., particularly as tensions escalate over its nuclear ambitions. In 2024, Iran launched two large-scale attacks on Israel using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, heightening regional concerns.

Meanwhile, Iran is signaling interest in re-engaging in possible negotiations with the U.S. even as it continues its military expansion.

During the IRGC’s official celebrations, Bagheri honored the role of the paramilitary force, particularly praising the late Qassem Soleimani for his contributions to Iran’s military objectives. The IRGC also issued a statement lauding its members as “protectors of the Islamic Revolution.”

In addition to its military display, Iran unveiled a domestically produced large gas turbine, highlighting its technological advancements. Iranian state media emphasized the achievement by comparing it to turbines built by multinational corporations such as General Electric and Siemens.
