The approximately 180 dialysis patients being treated daily in Nahariya Hospital will begin receiving a dose of pomegranate juice as part of a study being conducted by the head of the Western Galil medical facility’s dialysis unit, Prof. Batya Crystal.
Based on scientific research, Prof. Crystal believes the benefits of the pomegranate juice may be enjoyed by all, including the dialysis patients, hoping the magic potion will reduce infection as well as contributing to the good health of the cardiac and vascular systems of the patients, who officials hope will also enjoy the healthful addition to their diet while on dialysis.
The program will monitor the health of the patients for the period of one year and if Prof. Crystal’s research is correct, a glass of pomegranate juice may become part and parcel of dialysis therapy for many in Israel or perhaps around the world.
The dialysis center in the northern facility is said to be among the best in the country.

I often wondered why a pomegranate was included as one of the shivat haminim that E”Y is blessed with. The other 6 seem more essential.
I then heard from a Rav that most probably due to the pomegranates amazing healing powers it was included as one of the 7.
It is amazing that we are only now rediscovering it’s powers – Ma rabu Maasecha hashem !
What are they effects on a diabetic?
“magic potion”? Please. This is what happens when a yeshivish reporter covers a science story. What is Prof Crystal’s hypothesis? How does she think it will improve the patients’ health? What is the proposed mechanism?
smart – Although there may be some active ingredient which would benefit diabetics, remember that pomegranate juice is relatively high in sugar, like any other fruit juice.
Pomegranates are high in anti oxidents they combine well when mixed with cranberries or cranberries. Pomegranates would be healthful as a drink.
