ban Hamas from the upcoming elections. Peres told 15 visiting British parliamentarians that “you are mistaken if you believe that democracy is just democratic elections”. The president stated that democracy is a fulltime endeavor, not just something that takes place on Election Day.
He stated if Hamas wishes to have a legitimate place on the election roster, the terror organization must first decide if it wishes to shoot or wishes to be a member of the system. The president instructed the guests to take a good look at the goings-on in Gaza and it is immediately clear to all just what Hamas represents. He cited the brutality against members of Fatah in Gaza, whom are regularly targeted by Hamas activists.
Mr. Peres also briefed the visiting parliamentarians on the talks between Israel and the PA as well as effort towards normalizing relations with Israel’s neighbors.
