The Ohr Yarok non-profit organization leading the battle against road deaths in Israel reports that more Israelis have been killed as a result of vehicular road deaths than from all of the nation’s wars. Ohr Yarok places the number of deaths on the nation’s roadways since 1948 at 30,000.
Shmuel Abuav, the organization’s director addressed the alarming numbers at a press conference, asking how the treasury can cut NIS 200 million from the battle against road deaths when there is not enough funding to begin with.
The number of fatalities is 6,000 more than the number of fallen in wars since the nation began recording statistics in 1860. Despite the alarming numbers and the statistics to back up their objections, Finance Minister Roni Bar-On plans to cut NIS 200 from the budget of the National Road Safety Administration, which Ohr Yarok explains will have a devastating impact on their efforts and it will also result in many planned road improvement projects being scrapped.
