As tensions mount between Israel and Iran, Republican vice presidential candidate Senator JD Vance emphasized that, while Israel has a right to defend itself, a war with Iran would not align with U.S. interests. Vance made these comments during an appearance on The Tim Dillon Show on Saturday, where he discussed the potential implications of an escalating conflict in the Middle East.
“Israel has the right to defend itself,” Vance said, but added that U.S. interests do not always align with those of its allies. “America’s interest is sometimes going to be distinct. Sometimes we’re going to have overlapping interests, and sometimes we’re going to have a distinct interest,” he explained. “And our interest, I think, very much, is in not going to war with Iran.”
Vance argued that direct involvement in a conflict with Iran would come at a significant cost to the United States, both financially and strategically. “It would be a huge distraction of resources; it would be massively expensive to our country,” he said.
While he expressed opposition to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, he advocated for diplomatic strategies to discourage Iran’s nuclear ambitions, rather than military intervention.
Highlighting the principles behind the Abraham Accords, Vance advocated for a foreign policy approach he termed “smart diplomacy,” which he credited to the Trump administration. The accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations, embody a strategy that empowers regional allies to maintain their own security without heavy U.S. involvement.
“America doesn’t have to constantly police every region of the world,” Vance argued. “We should empower people to police their own regions of the world.”
