Democratic Leaders Call for Special Counsel Investigation into Kushner’s Dealings with Saudi Arabia

The Democratic chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Ron Wyden, and Rep. Jamie Raskin have formally requested that Attorney General Merrick Garland appoint a special counsel to investigate whether Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former President Donald Trump, acted as an unregistered foreign agent for Saudi Arabia.

According to a letter sent by Wyden and Raskin, Kushner allegedly engaged in discussions on U.S.-Saudi diplomacy, specifically concerning Israel, with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The letter references an October 4 Reuters report detailing these diplomatic exchanges, prompting the lawmakers to seek an investigation into possible violations of U.S. foreign policy regulations.

“This revelation is deeply disturbing, as Mr. Kushner appears to be influencing U.S. foreign policy by acting as a political consultant to the Saudi government while also accepting their money,” wrote Wyden and Raskin in their eight-page appeal to Garland. They argue that Kushner’s close ties to former President Trump and potential foreign influence warrant a special counsel’s oversight to ensure political neutrality in the investigation.

Kushner, who served as a top Middle East advisor in Trump’s administration, founded Affinity Partners in 2021, a private equity firm that received $2 billion in funding from Saudi Arabia, according to congressional investigators. In response to the letter, Kushner dismissed the allegations, calling them “silly political stunts” and denying any conflict of interest. He criticized Wyden and Raskin’s actions as “beneath the level of seriousness that both of their chambers deserve.”

Chad Mizelle, Chief Legal Officer at Affinity Partners, echoed Kushner, calling the lawmakers’ request a “disgraceful attempt to turn an already weaponized DOJ into a fully political operation with accusations that have no merit or evidence.”

While the Department of Justice has confirmed receipt of the letter, it has yet to comment on any potential investigation. The Saudi Arabian embassy has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
